"The Great Wave off Kanagawa," also known as "The Great Wave" or "Under the Wave off Kanagawa," is a woodblock print created by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849). It is part of his series "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" (Fugaku Sanjūrokkei), which he produced between 1830 and 1833 during the Edo period. The print depicts a towering wave with a curved form about to crash down on three small fishing boats. In the background, Mount Fuji rises majestically against the horizon. The Great Wave is often interpreted as a symbol of the power of nature, the transient nature of life, and the constant presence of Mount Fuji as a symbol of stability and endurance. The wave is both beautiful and threatening, capturing the dual nature of the natural world.
