In 1889, Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh created one of his most famous works, Irises. Van Gogh was a prolific artist who created some of the world’s most iconic works of art during his brief 10-year career. He created Irises while in the asylum of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, a year before his death. It was created in a single day, and is thought to be a representation of his emotional state at the time. The painting is now housed in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The painting was not well received at the time of its creation and Van Gogh himself described it as “a failure”. However, it has since become one of his most beloved and recognizable works. It has been widely reproduced in a variety of media and is now seen as a symbol of Van Gogh's genius.The painting was created using oil on canvas and depicts a field of purple and yellow irises. Irises was the first painting van Gogh sold in his lifetime and has since become one of the most recognizable and beloved works of art in the world.
